Flying With Dad: Michael's Memories

Michael's story as told to AOPA.

Michael

My Dad was a WWII carrier-based Marine Corp fighter pilot flying the F4U Corsair.  He went all the way from San Diego, through the Pacific Islands, to Japan, flying both day and night,  through some unfriendly skies. After the war, he continued flying in a Helio Courier from a 700 foot strip he had bladed out behind our farmhouse. I was flying with him the first time he landed on the strip, and I remember telling him he looked awfully close to the trees on the approach end of the strip. He just smiled and said "I have that under control. " And he did as we made a carrier landing using the first 1/3 of the strip.

Thanks for the memories!
