PPS Podcast on Aircraft Accidents Vs. Incidents Now Available

It’s one of the most common questions that AOPA Legal Services Plan (LSP) attorneys get from members after a mishap… “What’s the difference between an aircraft accident and an incident? And what, if anything, do I need to report to the FAA and/or NTSB?”

To tackle this topic, AOPA staff attorney, instrument-rated commercial pilot and PPS Podcast moderator Chad Mayer invited panel attorney and instrument-rated private pilot Edward Hadley to discuss these frequently asked questions, and to provide general guidance on the subject.

Hadley was asked to participate because his May 2016 article entitled, “What’s the Difference between an Aircraft Accident and an Aircraft Incident” continues to be one of the most popular panel attorney articles that has been published in PPS Insights. Since its debut, Hadley’s article is a top search engine keyword match on the topic, garnering nearly 10,000 views to date.

Edward will walk listeners through his article and explain why the difference between an accident and incident is important for pilots to know, including what the NTSB defines as substantial damage and when filing a NASA report is appropriate.

The podcast is currently available for download through iTunes and AOPA’s Podcast website.
